Description
Overview of the medicine
A vitamin D3 supplement in liquid drop form, specifically designed for infants and young children to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency and promote healthy bone development.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not indicated for adult use; adult formulations of Vitamin D are available.
Elderly
Not indicated for elderly use; elderly formulations of Vitamin D are available.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in renal impairment; consult a physician for appropriate dosing and monitoring of calcium levels in pediatric patients.
How to Take
Administer orally, directly into the child's mouth or mixed with a small amount of milk, juice, or food. Use the provided dropper for accurate dosing. Do not add to a full bottle of formula or other food, as the child might not consume the entire portion.
Mechanism of Action
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is a prohormone that is converted in the body to its active form, calcitriol. Calcitriol helps regulate calcium and phosphate levels, promoting their absorption from the gut and deposition into bones, thereby maintaining bone health.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Several days to weeks for physiological effects to manifest, peak blood levels of active metabolite within 24-48 hours after a single dose.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in bile and feces; small amounts in urine.
Half life
Parent compound (cholecalciferol): approximately 24 hours. Active metabolite (calcitriol): 3-6 hours. Storage in fat cells can prolong overall effect.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the small intestine, especially with fatty meals. Bioavailability is enhanced by dietary fats.
Metabolism
Undergoes hydroxylation in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (calcidiol), then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol), the active form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia
- •Hypervitaminosis D
- •Malabsorption syndrome (unless deficiency is corrected by parental routes)
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroids
May reduce vitamin D effects.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase risk of hypercalcemia.
Mineral oil, Orlistat
May impair vitamin D absorption.
Bile acid sequestrants (e.g., cholestyramine)
May impair vitamin D absorption.
Anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, barbiturates)
May increase vitamin D metabolism, reducing its effectiveness.
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, thirst, polyuria, constipation), weakness, and fatigue. Severe cases can lead to renal damage and calcification of soft tissues. Treatment involves discontinuing Vitamin D, hydrating, and managing hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
This is a pediatric product. For adult women, Vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and lactation is generally safe and often recommended, but should be at appropriate adult dosages under medical supervision.
