Description
Overview of the medicine
Elygyl 200 mg Suspension contains Metronidazole, an antimicrobial medication used to treat various infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. It is effective against infections of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, joints, and respiratory system. The suspension form is suitable for pediatric patients or those who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Varies greatly by indication. E.g., Amoebiasis: 500-750 mg orally 3 times daily for 5-10 days. Anaerobic infections: 500 mg orally 3 times daily for 7-10 days.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required in elderly patients with hepatic impairment. Otherwise, generally same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment typically needed for renal impairment, but caution in severe cases due to metabolite accumulation.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Shake the suspension well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole enters microbial cells, where its nitro group is reduced by electron transport proteins. This reduction forms highly reactive nitro-radical anions that disrupt DNA synthesis and cause DNA damage, leading to microbial cell death. It is bactericidal against anaerobic bacteria and parasiticidal against protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by infection, typically within hours to days.
Excretion
Mainly renal (60-80% as metabolites and unchanged drug); some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 8 hours (range 6-12 hours).
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, bioavailability approximately 80%. Peak plasma concentrations within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic by oxidation and glucuronidation. Major metabolite is 2-hydroxymethylmetronidazole, which also has some antibacterial activity.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.
- First trimester of pregnancy (relative contraindication, use with caution).
