Description
Overview of the medicine
Finacof-5-mg Syrup is a combination medication used to relieve symptoms associated with cough, cold, allergies, and flu, such as dry cough, runny nose, sneezing, and nasal congestion.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children 12 years and over: 10 mL (2 teaspoonfuls) every 4-6 hours, not exceeding 4 doses in 24 hours.
Elderly
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary due to potential for increased sensitivity and reduced renal/hepatic function. Consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose reduction may be required due to decreased excretion of metabolites. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Administer orally. Use a measuring spoon or cup to ensure accurate dosage. May be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Dextromethorphan suppresses cough by acting on the cough center in the medulla. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that constricts blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that blocks histamine H1 receptors, reducing allergic symptoms like runny nose and sneezing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Cough suppression typically begins within 15-30 minutes for Dextromethorphan. Decongestant and antihistamine effects also occur relatively quickly (within 30-60 minutes).
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
Dextromethorphan: 1.4-3.9 hours. Phenylephrine: 2-3 hours. Chlorpheniramine: 20-24 hours.
Absorption
Dextromethorphan is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Phenylephrine and Chlorpheniramine are also well-absorbed orally.
Metabolism
Dextromethorphan is extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP2D6. Phenylephrine undergoes first-pass metabolism in the gut wall and liver. Chlorpheniramine is metabolized in the liver.
