Atorvastatin, marketed as Lipinor, is a statin medication used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It is also used to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Uses & Indications

Primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia

Prevention of cardiovascular events in patients at high risk

Dosage

Adults

Initial dose 10 or 20 mg once daily. Dosage range is 10-80 mg once daily.

Elderly

No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised.

How to Take

Administer orally, can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Mechanism of Action

Atorvastatin selectively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in cholesterol production in the liver. This inhibition reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver and increases the removal of LDL cholesterol from the blood.
