Description
Overview of the medicine
Moxin 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic from the penicillin group, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250-500 mg every 8 hours, or 500-875 mg every 12 hours, depending on severity and infection site. This suspension strength is primarily for children.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction or increased dosing interval is required. For CrCl <30 mL/min, dosage adjustment is crucial.
How to Take
Orally, with or without food. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use a measuring spoon or oral syringe for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It is bactericidal.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 30-60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys, through both glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Significant amounts excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when given orally. Food does not significantly affect absorption.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites. About 10-25% of the dose is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, penicillin, or any other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., cephalosporins)
- •Infectious mononucleosis (increased risk of rash)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases amoxicillin levels by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash, especially in hyperuricemic patients.
Methotrexate
Reduced excretion of methotrexate, increasing toxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (use additional birth control).
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and not frozen.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and sometimes crystalluria (kidney stone formation). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered safe for breastfeeding infants, but monitor for diarrhea or candidiasis.
