Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
875 mg orally every 12 hours, or 500 mg every 8 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. For Moxin 875 mg, typically twice daily.
Elderly

Renal_impairment
Dose reduction necessary for severe renal impairment. Consult a doctor for specific guidelines.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Complete the full course as prescribed.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily renal, with about 60-80% excreted unchanged in urine within 6 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.

Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, acid-stable.

Partially metabolized (10-25%) to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to penicillins or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to another beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., cephalosporins, carbapenems).
- •Infectious mononucleosis (increased risk of rash).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase INR and risk of bleeding.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash, especially in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity by reducing its renal clearance.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (rare).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalance. In severe cases, crystalluria leading to renal failure has been reported. Management is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis can remove Amoxicillin from circulation.
