Description
Overview of the medicine
Moxin 250 mg Injection contains Moxifloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is administered intravenously.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg once daily by intravenous infusion over 60 minutes.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required based on age, but renal function should be monitored.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for mild to severe renal impairment (including hemodialysis and CAPD).
How to Take
Administer by slow intravenous infusion over 60 minutes. Do not administer as a rapid or bolus injection.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes after intravenous administration.
Excretion
Approximately 20% excreted unchanged in urine, 25% in feces; remainder as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapid distribution after intravenous administration.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, via glucuronidation and sulfation, with about 50% metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any excipients.
- •History of tendinopathy associated with quinolone use.
- •Children and adolescents below 18 years of age.
- •Patients with prolonged QT interval or uncorrected hypokalemia.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Enhanced anticoagulant effect (monitor INR).
QT-prolonging drugs
Increased risk of QT prolongation (e.g., Class IA and III antiarrhythmics, tricyclic antidepressants, macrolides, antipsychotics).
Storage
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Protect from freezing.
Overdose
In case of acute overdose, gastric lavage (if oral intake) or other appropriate measures (e.g., hydration) are recommended. Monitor ECG due to the potential for QT prolongation. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing moxifloxacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Moxifloxacin is excreted in human milk; therefore, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug.
