Description
Overview of the medicine
Napa 80 mg Pediatric Drop contains Paracetamol, a widely used analgesic and antipyretic medication. It is specifically formulated for infants and young children to reduce fever and relieve mild to moderate pain, such as headache, teething pain, cold and flu symptoms, and post-immunization fever.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not indicated for adults; refer to adult formulations of Paracetamol.
Elderly
Not indicated for elderly; refer to adult formulations of Paracetamol.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustments may be necessary in severe renal impairment; consult a physician for children.
How to Take
Orally. Administer using the provided calibrated dropper, ensuring accurate measurement according to the prescribed dose. Can be given with or without food. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Paracetamol's exact mechanism is not fully understood but is believed to involve inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system, leading to its analgesic and antipyretic effects. It acts centrally to reduce fever by direct action on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center, resulting in peripheral vasodilation and increased sweating.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Analgesia: 30-60 minutes, Antipyresis: 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted predominantly in the urine as glucuronide and sulfate conjugates. Less than 5% is excreted unchanged.
Half life
1.25 to 3 hours in adults; slightly longer in neonates and cirrhotic patients.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 30-60 minutes.
Metabolism
Mainly metabolized in the liver, primarily by conjugation with glucuronic acid and sulfate. A minor but highly reactive intermediate metabolite (NAPQI) is formed by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any component of the formulation
- •Severe hepatic impairment or active liver disease
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Chronic alcohol consumption increases the risk of paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity (not relevant for pediatric drop but important for paracetamol in general).
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin with prolonged regular use, increasing the risk of bleeding.
Other paracetamol-containing products
Concurrent use increases the risk of paracetamol overdose and hepatotoxicity.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, pallor, and sweating, potentially leading to severe liver damage. Seek immediate medical attention. Treatment involves gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and administration of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
While paracetamol is generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation at recommended doses, this pediatric formulation is not intended for pregnant or lactating individuals. Consult a healthcare professional for appropriate formulations and dosage.
