Description
Overview of the medicine
Neurovan 25 mg Capsule contains Pregabalin, which is used to treat neuropathic pain, epilepsy (partial seizures), and generalized anxiety disorder.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Starting dose for neuropathic pain is typically 75 mg twice daily or 50 mg three times daily (total 150 mg/day), titrated up to a maximum of 300 mg twice daily or 200 mg three times daily (total 600 mg/day). For 25mg capsules, titration begins with lower doses (e.g., 25 mg 2-3 times daily).
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required due to decreased renal function. Start with a lower dose and titrate cautiously.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be reduced significantly based on creatinine clearance. For severe impairment, dose can be as low as 25 mg once daily.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Pregabalin binds with high affinity to the alpha2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, which leads to a reduction in the release of several neurotransmitters, thereby exerting its analgesic, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1 hour for some effects, but full therapeutic effect may take several weeks.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys.
Half life
Approximately 6.3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations occur within 1.5 hours.
Metabolism
Negligible metabolism in humans; approximately 98% of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Pregabalin or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids)
Increased risk of CNS depression (somnolence, dizziness). Concurrent use should be approached with caution.
Thiazolidinedione Antidiabetic Agents (e.g., pioglitazone, rosiglitazone)
May increase the risk of peripheral edema and weight gain.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include somnolence, confusion, agitation, and, rarely, coma. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; hemodialysis may be beneficial in some cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during breastfeeding as Pregabalin is excreted in breast milk.

Lab Monitoring
- Renal function (creatinine clearance) should be monitored, especially in elderly patients and those with pre-existing kidney impairment.
- Monitor for signs of suicidal ideation or unusual behavioral changes.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of gradual dose tapering to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
- Counsel patients on potential CNS depressant effects and the need to avoid alcohol.
- Monitor for signs of misuse or dependence, especially in patients with a history of substance abuse.
- Adjust dose carefully in elderly patients and those with renal impairment.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not stop taking Neurovan abruptly, as this may lead to withdrawal symptoms (e.g., insomnia, nausea, headache, anxiety). Gradually reduce the dose under medical supervision.
- Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking this medication.
- Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual changes in mood or behavior, or thoughts of self-harm.
- Be aware that this medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness, especially at the start of treatment.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose.
Driving Precautions
Neurovan may cause dizziness, somnolence, and blurred vision. Patients should be advised not to drive or operate complex machinery until they are reasonably certain that Pregabalin does not adversely affect their ability to perform such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Initially, avoid activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you know how the medicine affects you.
- Manage weight through diet and exercise, as weight gain can be a side effect.
