Description
Overview of the medicine
Acerux-3 Eye Ointment contains Aceruacin 0.3%, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria causing ocular infections. It is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, and other superficial eye infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small ribbon (approx. 1/2 inch) into the conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily for 7-10 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment required for renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Wash hands before and after application. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket. Apply a small amount of ointment into the pocket. Close eye gently and roll eyeball to spread the ointment. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Aceruacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA, preventing bacterial growth and reproduction, ultimately resulting in bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement often observed within 2-3 days.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the lacrimal system and superficial ocular washout. Any systemically absorbed drug is likely renally excreted.
Half life
Not well characterized systemically due to minimal absorption; ocular tissue half-life is longer, supporting twice-daily dosing.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. High concentrations are achieved in ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Negligible systemic metabolism; localized metabolism in ocular tissues is not significant.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Aceruacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Viral or fungal ocular infections (unless co-treated with appropriate agents)
Drug Interactions
Systemic Fluoroquinolones
Though systemic absorption is minimal, theoretical risk of additive adverse effects with systemic fluoroquinolones exists (e.g., tendon issues), though extremely rare.
Other Ophthalmic Preparations
If using multiple ophthalmic medications, allow at least 5 minutes between applications.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature (15-30°C). Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Due to the topical nature and minimal systemic absorption, an acute overdose is unlikely. If excessive amount is applied, it can be wiped from the eye. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor before use.
