Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with thick, viscous mucus. It helps to thin and clear mucus from the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not for adult use (pediatric formulation). For children: up to 2 years: 0.5 mL (3 mg) twice daily; 2-5 years: 0.5 mL (3 mg) thrice daily; 6-12 years: 1 mL (6 mg) 2-3 times daily.
Elderly
Not for elderly use (pediatric formulation).
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; dosage reduction may be necessary. Consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally using the provided dropper. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by increasing the synthesis and secretion of surfactant and by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides in the bronchial secretions, leading to a reduction in mucus viscosity and improved mucociliary clearance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Mucolytic effect usually within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (about 90%) as metabolites, with a small amount excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to various inactive metabolites, mainly via glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- Rare hereditary conditions that may be incompatible with an excipient of the product.
Drug Interactions
Antitussives
Co-administration with antitussives (cough suppressants) is not recommended as it may lead to accumulation of mucus due to inhibited cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and induced emesis may be considered if recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, only if clearly necessary and after consulting a physician. Ambroxol passes into breast milk, so caution is advised during lactation.
