Description
Overview of the medicine
Antipro 200 mg Suspension is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication primarily used to treat various infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. It is effective against infections of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, joints, gynecological infections, and sexually transmitted diseases like trichomoniasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days. Giardiasis: 250 mg three times daily for 5-7 days. Anaerobic infections: 400 mg three times daily for 7 days. Doses should be adjusted based on infection severity and patient response.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution should be exercised, and renal/hepatic function should be monitored.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min), dosage reduction to half of the usual dose may be considered. No adjustment needed for mild to moderate impairment.
How to Take
Take Antipro 200 mg Suspension orally, preferably with or after food, to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole enters the microbial cells by passive diffusion. Once inside, its nitro group is reduced by electron transport proteins (ferrodoxin) present in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. This reduction process produces highly reactive cytotoxic compounds that damage microbial DNA and other macromolecules, leading to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects usually within 24-48 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (60-80% of the dose) as unchanged drug and metabolites; a small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 8 hours (range 6-12 hours).
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by oxidation, to form hydroxylated and glucuronidated metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives
- First trimester of pregnancy (relative contraindication)
- Active central nervous system (CNS) disease
- Blood dyscrasias
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Disulfiram-like reaction (nausea, vomiting, flushing, tachycardia) when consumed with or shortly after metronidazole. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 72 hours after.
Lithium
May increase serum lithium levels, leading to lithium toxicity.
Warfarin
Potentiates the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants, increasing the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR/PT is required.
Cimetidine
May prolong the half-life of metronidazole by inhibiting its metabolism.
Phenobarbital/Phenytoin
May reduce metronidazole effectiveness by increasing its metabolism.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, ataxia, and mild disorientation. There is no specific antidote. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered within the first few hours of ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. While studies in animals have not shown harm, human data are limited, especially in the first trimester. Use only if clearly needed after careful consideration of risks and benefits. Metronidazole is excreted into breast milk; therefore, either nursing should be interrupted or the drug should be discontinued during lactation.

Lab Monitoring
- Complete blood count (CBC) for prolonged therapy (>10 days) or high doses.
- Liver function tests (LFTs) in patients with hepatic impairment or prolonged therapy.
- Renal function tests if renal impairment is suspected.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to complete the full course to prevent resistance and recurrence.
- Emphasize strict alcohol avoidance due to disulfiram-like reaction.
- Monitor for neurological symptoms, especially with prolonged therapy.
- Caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment; dose reduction may be necessary.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not consume alcohol or alcohol-containing products during treatment and for at least 3 days after stopping.
