Description
Overview of the medicine
Aristomox-CV is a combination antibiotic containing Amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, and Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat various bacterial infections that are resistant to Amoxicillin alone.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg/125 mg tablet every 8 hours or 500 mg/125 mg tablet every 12 hours, depending on severity. For severe infections, higher doses may be prescribed.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function, similar to adults.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is necessary. For mild to moderate impairment, 250 mg/125 mg every 12 hours. For severe impairment, not recommended or requires significant dose reduction and monitoring.
How to Take
Take orally at the start of a meal to minimize potential gastrointestinal intolerance. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid irreversibly binds to and inactivates beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, thereby extending Amoxicillin's spectrum of activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine via renal tubular secretion and glomerular filtration.
Half life
Amoxicillin: approximately 1 hour; Clavulanic Acid: approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when taken at the start of a meal.
Metabolism
Amoxicillin is minimally metabolized; Clavulanic acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
- History of Amoxicillin/Clavulanate-associated jaundice or hepatic dysfunction.
- Severe renal impairment (without dose adjustment).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect, requiring close INR monitoring.
Allopurinol
Increased risk of skin rash.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal excretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
May cause gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), electrolyte imbalance, and convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis may be used to remove the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy when clearly needed, but consult a doctor. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation.
