Description
Overview of the medicine
Avlomox 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid used to treat various bacterial infections in children and adults.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Specific adult dosage forms (e.g., higher strength tablets) are usually prescribed. This suspension is primarily for pediatric use.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be needed based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required; consult product leaflet or physician.
How to Take
To be taken orally. Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Administer using the provided measuring spoon or cup. For pediatric use, consult a physician for appropriate weight-based dosage.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects Amoxicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, thus extending Amoxicillin's spectrum of activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid; Peak plasma concentrations usually occur within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (amoxicillin) and renally (clavulanic acid).
Half life
Amoxicillin: approximately 1-1.5 hours; Clavulanic acid: approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Both amoxicillin and clavulanate are well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration.
Metabolism
Amoxicillin is partially metabolized; Clavulanic acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics
- History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanate therapy
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs amoxicillin blood levels.
Allopurinol
Increased risk of skin rash.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 25°C in a dry place. Once reconstituted, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7-10 days. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms include gastrointestinal upset and fluid/electrolyte imbalance. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, hemodialysis may be considered in cases of severe renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B in pregnancy. Use with caution during lactation; small amounts of both amoxicillin and clavulanate are excreted in breast milk.
