Description
Overview of the medicine
Biozinc-I Syrup is a nutritional supplement combining elemental Zinc and Iron. It is used to prevent and treat deficiencies of these essential minerals, especially in conditions like malnutrition, anemia, or during periods of increased demand such as growth, pregnancy, and lactation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) once daily or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Elderly: Same as adult dosage, or as advised by physician, considering overall health status.
Renal_impairment
Renal Impairment: Consult a physician; dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe cases.
How to Take
Oral. Preferably taken after meals to minimize gastric upset. Shake the bottle well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous enzymatic reactions, protein synthesis, cell division, and immune function. Iron is crucial for hemoglobin formation, oxygen transport, and various metabolic processes. Together, they support growth, development, and overall health.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Nutritional effects are gradual, observed over weeks to months with consistent use.
Excretion
Zinc is primarily excreted via feces, with minor renal excretion. Iron is minimally excreted; primarily through shedding of cells (skin, gut) and menstrual blood loss in females.
Half life
Zinc: Approximately 280 days (intracellular). Iron: Not a true half-life; recycled within the body, excess stored or excreted.
Absorption
Zinc absorption varies (10-40%) depending on dietary factors and body stores, primarily in the small intestine. Iron absorption (5-35%) is regulated by body iron stores and dietary factors, mainly in the duodenum.
Metabolism
Zinc is not metabolized but integrated into proteins and enzymes. Iron is not metabolized in the traditional sense; it is incorporated into heme, stored as ferritin/hemosiderin, or transported by transferrin.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis (conditions of iron overload)
- Severe renal impairment (use with caution)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce absorption of iron and zinc. Take at different times.
Levothyroxine
Iron can impair levothyroxine absorption. Separate by at least 4 hours.
Calcium supplements
May reduce absorption of iron. Take at different times.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Zinc and Iron can decrease absorption of these antibiotics. Separate administration by at least 2-4 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lethargy, and in severe cases, shock and cardiovascular collapse (due to iron toxicity). Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage, chelation therapy (e.g., deferoxamine for iron) may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and beneficial during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased nutritional demands, especially if deficiencies are present. Consult a physician.
