Description
Overview of the medicine
Brodil SR (Bromhexine Hydrochloride) is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory disorders associated with excessive mucus. It works by reducing the viscosity of mucus, making it easier to clear from the airways, thereby relieving productive cough.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually one 8 mg sustained release capsule once daily. The dose may be adjusted based on the severity of the condition and individual response.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in frail elderly patients or those with significant comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal or hepatic impairment, the dosage should be reduced, or the interval between doses extended, due to the risk of accumulation.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with or without food. Swallow the sustained release capsule whole; do not chew, crush, or break it.
Mechanism of Action
Bromhexine depolymerizes mucopolysaccharides directly and stimulates the serous glands of the respiratory tract, leading to increased volume and reduced viscosity of bronchial secretions. It also has secretomotoric action, assisting in the transport of mucus out of the respiratory tract.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within approximately 30 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily via urine (about 85-90%) as metabolites; a small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
The terminal half-life is 15-20 hours due to slow release from tissues, though the effective biological half-life is shorter, about 1 hour for the active metabolite.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, forming various hydroxylated derivatives and a dibromanthranilic acid metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bromhexine or any other component of the formulation.
- History of peptic ulcer disease (use with caution, as bromhexine may increase gastric secretion, although evidence is weak).
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Erythromycin)
May enhance the penetration of certain antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially improving their therapeutic efficacy.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or emesis may be considered if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, especially avoid during the first trimester. Bromhexine is excreted into breast milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

Clinical Trials
Bromhexine is an established drug, and most clinical trials focus on its efficacy in specific patient populations, combination therapies, or new delivery methods rather than basic safety and efficacy.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is generally not required for Bromhexine. Monitor for symptoms of hepatic or renal dysfunction in patients with pre-existing impairment.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to maintain adequate fluid intake to maximize the mucolytic effect.
- Counsel patients regarding the potential for a transient increase in sputum volume and ease of expectoration after initiation of therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication to help loosen mucus.
- Report any severe skin reactions or allergic symptoms immediately to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Bromhexine is generally not expected to impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or other side effects that affect your concentration, avoid these activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hydration by drinking adequate water.
- Avoid smoking and exposure to irritants that can worsen respiratory conditions.
