Description
Overview of the medicine
Bromazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative used for the short-term treatment of anxiety, panic attacks, and other psychological conditions. It works by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical starting dose for anxiety is 3 mg, 2-3 times daily. May be increased up to 6-12 mg daily in divided doses for severe cases. Max 18-30 mg/day depending on indication and patient response.
Elderly
Lower doses are recommended, e.g., 1.5 mg, 2-3 times daily, to minimize sedation and ataxia.
Renal_impairment
Caution advised; dose adjustment may be necessary. Start with lower doses.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Swallow tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Bromazepam binds to specific benzodiazepine receptors on the GABA-A receptor complex in the central nervous system, enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA. This leads to reduced neuronal excitability, resulting in anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 20-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine as metabolites, with a small amount of unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via hydroxylation and glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
