Mechanism of Action
Butamirate Citrate acts centrally on the cough center in the brain, selectively inhibiting the cough reflex. It also has a bronchodilator effect and reduces airway resistance, thereby improving respiration. It does not possess any chemical relation to opium alkaloids.

Metabolism
Extensively metabolized by hydrolysis to 2-phenylbutyric acid and diethylaminoethoxyethanol, both of which have antitussive activity.

- Children under 6 years of age (for SR tablet form)
Drug Interactions
CNS depressants
May enhance CNS depression when co-administered.
Expectorants/Mucolytics
Concurrent use may lead to secretion retention in the bronchi due to inhibition of the cough reflex.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and hypotension. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and activated charcoal if overdose is recent.
