Description
Overview of the medicine
Clodal-1-cream contains clobetasol propionate, a highly potent corticosteroid, used for short-term treatment of inflammatory skin conditions unresponsive to less potent corticosteroids.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas once or twice daily for a maximum of 2 weeks. Do not exceed 50g per week.
Elderly
Use with caution; consider reduced frequency or duration.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment needed for topical application, but systemic absorption should be monitored if used extensively.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area. Do not cover with occlusive dressings unless directed by a doctor. Wash hands before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clobetasol propionate is a highly potent corticosteroid that works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching. It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours to days of application.
Excretion
Renal excretion of metabolites.
Half life
Systemic half-life not well established for topical application; for absorbed clobetasol, it is short.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin; absorption increases with skin damage, occlusion, and application to large surface areas.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, similar to other corticosteroids.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clobetasol propionate or other corticosteroids
- Rosacea
- Acne vulgaris
- Perioral dermatitis
- Pruritus without inflammation
- Perianal and genital pruritus
- Fungal or viral infections
- Children under 1 year of age.
Drug Interactions
Systemic Corticosteroids
Increased risk of systemic corticosteroid side effects if used concurrently due to potential additive effects. Minimal systemic absorption limits significant topical-systemic drug interactions.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with topical application. Chronic overdose or misuse can lead to systemic corticosteroid effects, including Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, and HPA axis suppression. Management involves gradual withdrawal under medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Clobetasol is classified as Pregnancy Category C. Exercise caution when administered to a nursing woman.

Extensively studied and widely used since its introduction. Ongoing post-marketing surveillance and studies on long-term effects and specific populations.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor for signs of HPA axis suppression (e.g., plasma cortisol levels) with extensive or prolonged use, especially in children.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize short-term use for resistant conditions.
- Educate patients on proper application technique and potential side effects.
- Monitor for signs of HPA axis suppression in high-risk patients (children, large surface area application, occlusive dressings).
Patient Guidelines
- Use exactly as directed by your doctor.
- Do not use for longer than prescribed (usually 2 weeks).
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
- Do not cover treated areas with airtight dressings unless advised by a doctor.
- Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
No known effects on the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good skin hygiene.
- Avoid irritants or allergens that may worsen your skin condition.
