Description
Overview of the medicine
Deprolin-G 200 mg Syrup contains Gabapentin, an antiepileptic drug also used to treat neuropathic pain. It is an oral solution formulated for ease of administration, especially in patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Starting dose for neuropathic pain is typically 300 mg once daily on day 1, 300 mg twice daily on day 2, and 300 mg three times daily on day 3, then titrated up to a maximum of 1800-3600 mg/day in three divided doses. For seizures, starting dose is 300 mg three times daily, adjusted based on response up to 3600 mg/day.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function, as Gabapentin is renally eliminated. Start with a lower dose and titrate cautiously.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be reduced significantly based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl <30 mL/min, maximum daily dose may be 300 mg every other day or 300 mg daily for CrCl 15-29 mL/min.
How to Take
Deprolin-G syrup can be taken with or without food. Measure the dose accurately using the provided measuring device. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Gabapentin's exact mechanism of action is not fully understood but it is believed to involve binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, which reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. This action contributes to its anticonvulsant and analgesic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies depending on indication, typically within hours for pain relief, longer for seizure control to reach steady state.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged by the kidneys. Renal clearance is directly proportional to creatinine clearance.
Half life
Approximately 5 to 7 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, but absorption is saturable, meaning bioavailability decreases with increasing dose.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in humans; does not induce hepatic enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Gabapentin or any component of the formulation.
- Acute pancreatitis (rare, but reported).
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
May enhance CNS depressant effects of Gabapentin.
Antacids
May decrease Gabapentin bioavailability; separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Opioids (e.g., Morphine)
May increase Gabapentin concentrations and enhance CNS depression. Monitor for increased sedation and respiratory depression.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, drowsiness, lethargy, and mild diarrhea. Management is primarily supportive care; hemodialysis can be used in severe renal impairment or life-threatening overdose.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Gabapentin is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have demonstrated Gabapentin's efficacy in managing partial seizures and neuropathic pain. Post-marketing surveillance continues to monitor safety and efficacy.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function (creatinine clearance) in elderly or renally impaired patients.
- Monitor for signs of CNS depression and behavioral changes.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on the importance of gradual titration and discontinuation to minimize adverse effects.
- Counsel patients about the risk of CNS depression, especially with concomitant use of other depressants or alcohol.
- Emphasize reporting any mood changes or suicidal ideation.
Patient Guidelines
- Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not stop taking Gabapentin suddenly, as it may increase seizure frequency.
- Report any new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual changes in mood or behavior to your doctor immediately.
- Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it may cause dizziness or drowsiness.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Gabapentin can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and impaired coordination. Patients should be warned not to drive or operate hazardous machinery until they are reasonably certain that Gabapentin does not adversely affect their ability to engage in such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle with balanced diet and regular exercise.
- Avoid alcohol consumption while on Gabapentin therapy.
