Description
Overview of the medicine
Encarlev 100 mg Tablet contains Levetiracetam, an antiepileptic drug used to treat various types of seizures in adults and children. It works by affecting nerve cells in the brain to reduce the frequency of seizures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 500 mg twice daily, may be increased by 500 mg twice daily every 2-4 weeks to a maximum of 1500 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be considered based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Requires significant dose reduction and careful monitoring. Dosage intervals should be increased.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid and not chewed or crushed.
Mechanism of Action
Levetiracetam's precise mechanism is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve binding to synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, thereby modulating neurotransmitter release and preventing hypersynchronization of neuronal activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within a few days of consistent dosing, but immediate seizure control may vary.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 66%), with a smaller fraction as inactive metabolite.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours in adults, and shorter (4-5 hours) in children.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-1.5 hours. Bioavailability is near 100%.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism in humans (less than 3% via enzymatic hydrolysis), not extensively metabolized by hepatic cytochrome P450 system.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Levetiracetam or any components of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Phenytoin
No significant pharmacokinetic interaction.
Valproate
No significant pharmacokinetic interaction.
Oral Contraceptives
No effect on the pharmacokinetics of oral contraceptives.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include somnolence, agitation, aggression, depressed level of consciousness, respiratory depression, and coma. Treatment is supportive, including gastric lavage or induced emesis, and symptomatic treatment. Hemodialysis can remove Levetiracetam from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in human milk, so caution is advised during breastfeeding.
