Description
Overview of the medicine
Eurolac 10 mg Tablet contains Bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative used for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel preparation before medical procedures such as colonoscopy.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5-10 mg orally once daily, usually at bedtime. Max 15 mg/day.
Elderly
Same as adults; begin with the lowest effective dose.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised with prolonged or excessive use.
How to Take
Swallow the tablet whole with water, usually at bedtime. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet. Avoid taking within one hour of antacids, milk, or dairy products.
Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl acts by stimulating the enteric neurons, leading to increased peristalsis in the colon and accumulation of water and electrolytes in the intestinal lumen, which softens the stool and promotes bowel movement.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral: 6-12 hours; Rectal: 15-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces, with a small portion of metabolites excreted renally.
Half life
Approximately 16 hours (for the active metabolite, bisacodyl-glucuronide).
Absorption
Poorly absorbed systemically when administered orally; less than 5% reaches systemic circulation.
Metabolism
Undergoes enterohepatic circulation and is metabolized in the liver to the active metabolite, desacetylbisacodyl, which is then glucuronidated.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Bisacodyl or any component
- Acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel diseases)
- Severe dehydration
- Intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus
Drug Interactions
Diuretics/Corticosteroids
May increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance, particularly hypokalemia.
Antacids/Milk/Dairy products
May cause premature dissolution of the enteric coating, leading to gastric irritation and dyspepsia.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include abdominal cramps, severe diarrhea, and significant fluid and electrolyte loss (especially potassium). Management involves supportive care, fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for short-term use during pregnancy and lactation, but use only when clearly needed and under medical advice. Limited systemic absorption minimizes risk to the fetus or infant.
