Relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial)

Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria

Dosage

Adults

5 mg (10 mL) once daily.

Elderly

No dosage adjustment generally required, but caution advised for renal or hepatic impairment.

Renal_impairment

For severe renal impairment, administer 5 mg (10 mL) every other day. Consult a doctor.

Mechanism of Action

Desloratadine is a potent, long-acting, non-sedating, selective peripheral histamine H1-receptor antagonist. It inhibits histamine release from mast cells and basophils, and also inhibits adhesion molecule expression and inflammatory cytokine release, thereby blocking the allergic cascade.

Side Effects

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Desloratadine, Loratadine, or any component of the formulation.

Drug Interactions

Alcohol

Desloratadine does not potentiate the effects of alcohol.

Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Azithromycin, Cimetidine, Fluoxetine

These drugs may increase plasma concentrations of Desloratadine. While clinical significance is generally minimal, caution is advised.

Storage

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include somnolence, increased heart rate, and headache. In case of overdose, initiate symptomatic and supportive treatment. Desloratadine is not eliminated by hemodialysis.
