Description
Overview of the medicine
Fungin-B is a topical cream combining an antifungal agent (clotrimazole) and a corticosteroid (betamethasone dipropionate) used to treat various fungal skin infections accompanied by inflammation, itching, and redness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice daily (morning and evening) for up to 2 weeks, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustments needed for elderly patients, use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustments needed as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply thinly to the affected skin area after cleaning and drying. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clotrimazole inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a crucial component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability and fungal cell death. Betamethasone dipropionate is a potent corticosteroid that suppresses inflammation, pruritus, and vasoconstriction.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms typically begins within a few days.
Excretion
Excreted in urine and bile if systemically absorbed.
Half life
Not well characterized for topical application; systemic half-life of betamethasone is around 5 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may increase with inflammation, occlusive dressings, or application to large surface areas.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver if systemically absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clotrimazole, betamethasone, or any excipients
- Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes, varicella)
- Tuberculosis of the skin
- Acne rosacea, perioral dermatitis
- Vaccination reactions
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Potential for increased anticoagulant effect with high systemic absorption of clotrimazole. Monitor INR.
Other topical corticosteroids
Avoid concurrent use to prevent excessive steroid exposure.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to minimal absorption. Excessive or prolonged use may lead to local adverse effects (skin atrophy, stretch marks) or systemic corticosteroid effects if applied to large areas or under occlusion. Treatment is symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Consult a doctor.
