Letab 500 mg Tablet is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissues. It contains Letabine, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based on age, but renal function should be assessed.
Renal_impairment
Reduce dose for creatinine clearance <50 mL/min; e.g., 250 mg once daily.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Letabine inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to cell death and bacterial eradication.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Letabine or other fluoroquinolones
- History of tendonitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use
- Myasthenia gravis
- Children and adolescents (due to risk of cartilage damage)
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May increase risk of CNS stimulation and convulsions.
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effects; monitor INR.
Theophylline
May increase theophylline levels and toxicity.
Antacids (containing magnesium, aluminum)
Decrease absorption of Letabine; take Letabine 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include CNS effects (confusion, tremors, seizures), nausea, vomiting. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and adequate hydration. Hemodialysis is not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk; avoid breastfeeding or discontinue the drug.
