Description
Overview of the medicine
Neuroprax 100 mg Tablet contains Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant medication used to treat certain types of seizures and neuropathic pain. It is believed to work by affecting calcium channels in the nervous system, thereby reducing the excitability of nerve cells.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For neuropathic pain: Initially 300 mg once daily on day 1, 300 mg twice daily on day 2, 300 mg three times daily on day 3. Then, dosage can be increased as needed up to 1800-3600 mg/day in three divided doses. For seizures: Initially 300 mg three times daily, then adjusted based on response up to 2400-3600 mg/day.
Elderly
Elderly patients may require lower doses and careful titration due to age-related decrease in renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 30-59 mL/min: 200-700 mg twice daily. For CrCl 15-29 mL/min: 200-700 mg once daily. For CrCl <15 mL/min: 100-300 mg once daily or every other day.
How to Take
Take Neuroprax tablets orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. For best results, take doses evenly spaced throughout the day.
Mechanism of Action
Gabapentin's exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is thought to act by binding with high affinity to the alpha2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. This binding modulates the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, thereby reducing neuronal excitability and pain transmission.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of analgesic effect usually within a few days to weeks for chronic neuropathic pain; anticonvulsant effect onset varies.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in the urine; renal clearance is directly proportional to creatinine clearance.
Half life
5 to 7 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Oral absorption is dose-dependent and saturable, decreasing with increasing dose. Bioavailability ranges from 60% for a 300 mg dose to 27% for a 1600 mg dose.
Metabolism
Not appreciably metabolized in humans; does not induce hepatic mixed-function oxidase enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Gabapentin or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Increases CNS depression. Avoid concomitant use.
Opioids (e.g., Morphine)
Can increase Gabapentin concentrations and enhance CNS depressant effects. Monitor for increased sedation.
Antacids (containing aluminum and magnesium)
Can reduce Gabapentin's bioavailability. Take Gabapentin at least 2 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, lethargy, blurred vision, slurred speech, and mild diarrhea. Management is supportive, including gastric lavage or emesis for recent ingestions. Hemodialysis can be used for severe cases, especially in renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Gabapentin is excreted into breast milk; caution advised during breastfeeding.

Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring is required for Gabapentin in patients with normal renal function. For patients with renal impairment or on prolonged therapy, monitoring of renal function may be considered.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on potential CNS depressant effects and the importance of not discontinuing abruptly.
- Be mindful of potential for misuse and dependence, especially in patients with a history of substance abuse.
- Adjust dose carefully in elderly and renally impaired patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not stop taking Neuroprax abruptly, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms or increased seizure frequency. Always consult your doctor before discontinuing.
- Avoid activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery, until you know how this medicine affects you.
- Report any unusual mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts to your doctor immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Gabapentin can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision, which may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Exercise caution and avoid such activities until you are certain you can perform them safely.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise. Limit alcohol intake.
- Ensure adequate sleep to manage fatigue and drowsiness.
