Description
Overview of the medicine
Optabac-05 Eye Drop contains Tobramycin 0.5% w/v, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infections of the external eye and its adnexa, such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For mild to moderate infections: Instill 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours. For severe infections: Instill 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 30 to 60 minutes initially, then reduce frequency as infection is controlled.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. No special dosage adjustment is generally required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to create a pouch, and apply drops into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to a defective bacterial cell membrane and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within minutes to hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine if significant systemic absorption occurs, which is rare with ophthalmic use.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption; systemic half-life is approximately 2-3 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized when administered topically to the eye.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tobramycin or any other aminoglycoside antibiotic, or to any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic preparations
If using multiple ophthalmic medications, wait at least 5 minutes between applications to allow each medication to be absorbed effectively.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical attention. Symptomatic and supportive treatment may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Exercise caution when administered to a nursing woman as small amounts may be excreted in breast milk. Consult a doctor before use.
