Description
Overview of the medicine
Povisep 1% w/v mouthwash is an antiseptic solution used for oral hygiene and to treat minor oral infections. It helps to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi in the mouth and throat.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Rinse with 10-15 ml (undiluted) for 30 seconds, up to 2-4 times daily. Do not swallow.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution, consult a doctor if prolonged use is intended.
How to Take
Use undiluted. Rinse thoroughly in the mouth for 30 seconds and then spit out. Do not swallow. For external oral use only.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine works by releasing iodine, which is a potent oxidizing agent. It rapidly penetrates microbial cell walls and membranes, disrupting their structure and essential proteins, enzymes, and nucleic acids, leading to microbial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily renal for absorbed iodine.
Half life
Not significant for topical oral use due to minimal absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact mucous membranes. Some absorption may occur through abraded mucosa.
Metabolism
Any absorbed iodine is metabolized similar to endogenous iodine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone
- Thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism) due to potential iodine absorption
- Patients undergoing radioactive iodine therapy
- Children under 6 years of age (risk of swallowing)
Drug Interactions
Lithium
May increase the hypothyroid effects of lithium.
Peroxides (e.g., Hydrogen Peroxide)
Concomitant use may reduce efficacy of both.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Accidental swallowing of large quantities may lead to gastrointestinal upset, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare cases, systemic absorption of iodine can occur, potentially affecting thyroid function. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution. Consult a doctor. Although systemic absorption is minimal, iodine can cross the placenta and enter breast milk. Prolonged or extensive use during pregnancy and lactation is generally not recommended due to potential effects on fetal/infant thyroid function.
