Description
Overview of the medicine
Povisep-125-V Eye Drop contains Povidone Iodine, an antiseptic agent used to treat and prevent various eye infections. It is effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For general antiseptic use: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) 2-4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. For pre-operative antisepsis: consult physician for specific protocol.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. No specific dose adjustment is necessary.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Close eye gently for a moment. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases free iodine, which exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity by oxidizing cellular components and interfering with protein synthesis. It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within seconds to minutes.
Excretion
Any absorbed iodine is primarily excreted renally.
Half life
Not well-defined for ophthalmic use; local action predominates. Systemic half-life of iodine is several days, but largely irrelevant for topical eye drops.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from ophthalmic use; primarily acts locally.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism. Primarily local breakdown and inactivation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone components.
- Caution in patients with known thyroid disorders due to potential (though minimal) systemic iodine absorption.
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications to prevent washout.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is highly unlikely with ophthalmic use. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for topical ophthalmic use during pregnancy and lactation due to minimal systemic absorption. However, consult a healthcare professional before use.
