Description
Overview of the medicine
Povisep-10-W-Solution contains Povidone-Iodine, a broad-spectrum antiseptic used for disinfecting skin, wounds, and mucous membranes. It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and spores.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply undiluted solution to the affected area as needed, usually 1-3 times daily. Allow to dry.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment, especially with prolonged or extensive use, due to potential iodine absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply directly to the skin or wound using a sterile swab or gauze. Do not swallow. Avoid contact with eyes.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases iodine, which rapidly penetrates microbial cells and oxidizes proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to cell death. It works by non-specific, rapid destruction of microorganisms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, within seconds to minutes of application.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed iodine and iodide are primarily excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Not applicable for topical use; systemic half-life of absorbed iodine is approximately 1-2 days.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption increases with large skin areas, prolonged exposure, or damaged skin.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed iodine is metabolized in the liver to iodide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone
- Thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goiter) due to potential iodine absorption
- Before and after radio-iodine therapy
- In premature neonates and infants up to 6 months of age
Drug Interactions
Lithium therapy
Systemic absorption of iodine can potentiate the hypothyroid effects of lithium.
Other topical antiseptics (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, silver sulfadiazine)
May lead to inactivation of povidone-iodine or other antiseptics.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep bottle tightly closed.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is unlikely with topical application. Ingestion or excessive absorption through large skin areas may lead to iodine poisoning, characterized by gastrointestinal upset, metabolic acidosis, renal impairment, and thyroid dysfunction. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution. Excessive iodine absorption could affect fetal or infant thyroid function. Consult a doctor before use, especially on large areas or for prolonged periods.
