Description
Overview of the medicine
Accuzith 200 mg suspension is an antibiotic containing Azithromycin, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in this specific suspension strength. For adult infections, higher strength tablets or capsules are generally prescribed. Dosage varies by indication (e.g., 500 mg once daily for 3 days or 250 mg once daily for 5 days).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function. Dosage should be similar to adults where applicable, with caution for underlying conditions.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance >40 ml/min). Use with caution in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 ml/min).
How to Take
For oral use. Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing translocation of peptide chains.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically observed within 2-3 days.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in bile; a small portion is excreted renally.
Half life
Terminal elimination half-life is 2-4 days.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 37%.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by N-demethylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, or any component of the formulation.
- History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase serum digoxin levels. Monitor digoxin levels.
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor prothrombin time/INR.
Nelfinavir
Can increase azithromycin serum concentrations. Monitor for azithromycin side effects.
Cyclosporine
May increase cyclosporine levels. Monitor cyclosporine levels and adjust dosage if necessary.
Antacids (aluminum and magnesium-containing)
Can reduce peak plasma levels of azithromycin. Administer azithromycin at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store the suspension at room temperature (not exceeding 30°C) and use within the recommended period. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management involves symptomatic and supportive measures. Gastric lavage and general supportive measures are indicated as required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Azithromycin is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
