Aire 1 mg Tablet contains Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist used for the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis. While 1 mg is a less common strength, Montelukast generally works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, substances in the body that cause inflammation and tightening of airways.

Uses & Indications

Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in patients 6 months of age and older.

Relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients 2 years of age and older.

Relief of symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis in patients 6 months of age and older.

Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in patients 6 years of age and older.

Dosage

Adults

The 1 mg strength is not typically prescribed for adults. Adult dosage for Montelukast is usually 10 mg once daily.

Elderly

No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but the 1 mg strength is not for this age group.

How to Take

Mechanism of Action

Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist. It specifically inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene type 1 (CysLT1) receptor, which is responsible for mediating the effects of leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4). By blocking this receptor, montelukast prevents bronchoconstriction, reduces inflammation, and inhibits mucus secretion, thereby improving respiratory function.

Onset

Clinical improvement in asthma symptoms typically occurs within one day of starting treatment.

Excretion

Primarily excreted in the feces via bile (approximately 86%), with less than 0.2% excreted in urine.

Plasma elimination half-life ranges from 2.7 to 5.5 hours.

Absorption

Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentration (Cmax) is achieved in about 2-4 hours for 4 mg and 5 mg chewable tablets.

Metabolism

Side Effects

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any component of the formulation.
Acute asthma attacks (Montelukast is not indicated for the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks).

Drug Interactions

Rifampin

May decrease the plasma concentration of Montelukast, as it is a potent inducer of CYP3A4, 2C8, and 2C9.

Phenobarbital

May decrease the plasma concentration of Montelukast, requiring careful monitoring.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Overdose

In cases of overdose, the most commonly reported adverse events were abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, and psychomotor hyperactivity. There is no specific antidote. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Montelukast is excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
