Description
Overview of the medicine
Alkanon-DT is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
General dosage: 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, or 750 mg to 1000 mg twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. For this 1000mg DT: typically 1000 mg twice daily for severe infections or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Dose adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction or increased dosing interval is required based on creatinine clearance (e.g., <30 mL/min requires dose adjustment).
How to Take
Alkanon-DT is a dispersible tablet. It can be dissolved in a small amount of water (e.g., half a glass) and consumed immediately, or it can be swallowed whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily via renal excretion of unchanged drug (50-70% of dose) and metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites; about 10-25% of the dose is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or any other penicillin antibiotic.
- History of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., cephalosporins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs amoxicillin blood levels by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
Concomitant use may increase the incidence of skin rash, particularly in hyperuricemic patients.
Methotrexate
Amoxicillin may reduce the renal clearance of methotrexate, potentially increasing its toxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; additional birth control methods may be advised.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time and increase the risk of bleeding; regular INR monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. In rare cases, crystalluria leading to renal failure has been observed. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including maintaining adequate fluid intake and monitoring renal function.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy, but use with caution and only if clearly needed. Amoxicillin is excreted into breast milk in small amounts; generally considered safe for nursing infants, but monitor for potential adverse effects (e.g., diarrhea, fungal infection).

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Amoxicillin has been extensively studied in numerous clinical trials since its introduction, establishing its efficacy and safety profile across various bacterial infections in diverse patient populations.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (e.g., creatinine clearance) in patients with impaired renal function or on prolonged high-dose therapy.
- Liver function tests (LFTs) may be monitored in rare cases of suspected hepatotoxicity.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) for prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize patient compliance to complete the entire course of therapy to minimize resistance development.
- Counsel patients on potential allergic reactions and when to seek immediate medical attention.
- Consider renal function adjustment in elderly and renally impaired patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence and resistance.
- Inform your doctor about any history of allergy, especially to penicillins or cephalosporins.
- Report any new or worsening side effects to your healthcare provider immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Generally, Amoxicillin does not impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, patients should be aware of possible side effects like dizziness, which could affect these activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain adequate hydration, especially when taking dispersible tablets.
- Avoid alcohol during the course of antibiotic treatment as it may exacerbate GI side effects.
