Description
Overview of the medicine
Aristoderm-005-1-cream is a topical corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation, itching, and redness associated with various skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin area once or twice daily, as directed by a physician. Do not use for more than 2-4 weeks without medical review.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution should be exercised due to potentially thinner skin and increased systemic absorption risk.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for topical use, but caution advised if extensive application or compromised skin barrier.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a small amount to the affected skin area and rub in gently. Wash hands before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes. Do not apply to broken or infected skin without medical advice.
Mechanism of Action
Betamethasone valerate, a potent corticosteroid, acts by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, called lipocortins. These proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor, arachidonic acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Local anti-inflammatory effects usually observed within hours to days of application.
Excretion
Excreted renally as metabolites.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application due to variable systemic absorption; systemically absorbed corticosteroids are metabolized and excreted.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids can occur, especially with prolonged use, large surface areas, or occlusive dressings. Absorption varies by site, vehicle, and skin integrity.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver, also in the skin.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to betamethasone valerate or any component of the cream
- Untreated cutaneous infections (bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic)
- Rosacea
- Acne vulgaris
- Perioral dermatitis
- Pruritus without inflammation
Drug Interactions
CYP3A4 inhibitors
Co-administration with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole) may increase systemic exposure of corticosteroids.
Other topical preparations
Avoid concurrent use of other topical medications on the same area unless advised by a doctor to prevent potential interactions or reduced efficacy.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to produce systemic effects, but chronic overuse or misuse can lead to systemic corticosteroid effects (e.g., Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Consult a doctor. In lactating mothers, use with caution, avoiding application to the breasts or areas where the infant might ingest the medicine.
