Description
Overview of the medicine
Brohexin 4 mg syrup contains Bromhexine Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is commonly prescribed for respiratory conditions associated with excessive or thick mucus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
8-16 mg (10-20 ml) three times daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage or extended intervals may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. May be taken with or without food. Use the measuring spoon/cup provided for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Bromhexine acts by increasing the synthesis of serous bronchial secretion, which helps in reducing the viscosity of mucus. It also activates the ciliary epithelium, aiding in the transport and clearance of mucus from the respiratory tract.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Mucolytic effects usually begin within 30 minutes of administration.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys (about 85-90%) as metabolites, with a small amount excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Approximately 6.5 hours (terminal elimination half-life, with significant first-pass metabolism).
Absorption
Readily and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by hydroxylation and subsequent glucuronidation. Metabolites include ambroxol.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bromhexine or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with peptic ulcer disease (use with caution).
Drug Interactions
Amoxicillin
Bromhexine may increase the penetration of antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline) into bronchial secretions.
Oral anticoagulants
No clinically significant interaction reported, but monitor with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, should be avoided unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Excreted into breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
