Description
Overview of the medicine
Bronsol 15 mg Syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is commonly prescribed for respiratory conditions associated with excessive mucus production.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 30 mg (10 ml of 15 mg/5 ml syrup) 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose interval may need to be extended in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. May be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup provided to ensure accurate dosage.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides, thereby reducing the viscosity of bronchial secretions. It also stimulates the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant, which plays a critical role in pulmonary defense mechanisms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30 minutes to 1 hour (mucolytic effect)
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally (about 90%) as metabolites, with a small portion unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours (terminal half-life)
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites via first-pass metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the syrup
- Rare hereditary conditions that may be incompatible with an excipient of the product (e.g., fructose intolerance for syrups containing sorbitol)
Drug Interactions
Cough suppressants
Concomitant use with antitussives may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the inhibition of the cough reflex. Avoid co-administration.
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline)
Ambroxol can increase the penetration of these antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion. Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment. Induce emesis or perform gastric lavage if overdose is recent and massive. Monitor vital signs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, should be avoided unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Excreted in breast milk, so use with caution during lactation or avoid if possible.
