Description
Overview of the medicine
Broxolin 15 mg Syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with excessive or viscous mucus. It helps thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mL (30 mg) 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment, the dosage frequency should be reduced. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Broxolin syrup is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup to ensure accurate dosage, especially for children. Drink plenty of fluids to aid the mucolytic action.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by increasing serous mucus secretion in the respiratory tract, reducing the viscosity of sputum, and enhancing mucociliary clearance. It also stimulates the synthesis and release of surfactant by alveolar type II pneumocytes, which helps maintain airway patency.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Mucolytic effect typically begins within 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys, with approximately 90% eliminated as metabolites and 10% as unchanged drug.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in about 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to various inactive metabolites, mainly by conjugation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any other component of the formulation.
- Patients with a history of gastric or duodenal ulcers (due to potential for mucosal damage, although rare with Ambroxol).
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
Concomitant administration of ambroxol with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline) may lead to an increase in the antibiotic concentration in broncho-pulmonary secretions and in sputum.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include mild diarrhea and restlessness. Management is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage and induced emesis are not usually recommended. Due to high protein binding and large volume of distribution, forced diuresis and hemodialysis are not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown adverse effects, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, should only be considered if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. Ambroxol is excreted into breast milk; therefore, it is not recommended for use during lactation.

Ambroxol has been widely studied in numerous clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety as a mucolytic agent in various respiratory conditions. Studies support its role in reducing sputum viscosity and improving mucociliary clearance.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is not typically required for Ambroxol.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to drink plenty of fluids to maximize mucolytic effect.
- Caution in patients with a history of gastric ulcers.
- Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity reactions, especially skin rashes.
