Description
Overview of the medicine
C-Rich 250 mg Chewable Tablet is a vitamin C supplement used to prevent or treat low levels of vitamin C in people who do not get enough of the vitamin from their diets. It is essential for immune function, collagen formation, and as an antioxidant.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For deficiency: 250-500 mg daily. For general health/supplementation: 250 mg daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, usually 250 mg daily.
Renal_impairment
Generally safe, but high doses (over 1g/day) should be avoided in severe renal impairment due to potential risk of oxalate stone formation.
How to Take
Chew or allow the tablet to dissolve in the mouth. Can be taken with or without food. For best absorption, it is often recommended to take with a meal.
Mechanism of Action
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient involved in the repair of tissue and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters. It is required for the functioning of several enzymes and is important for immune system function, collagen synthesis, and acts as a powerful antioxidant.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects are gradual with regular intake; acute effects are not typically seen with supplementation.
Excretion
Excreted renally (via kidneys) as unchanged ascorbic acid and its metabolites. Excess amounts are rapidly excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 days, depending on body stores and dose. When stores are saturated, half-life is shorter (around 30 minutes).
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine, by an active transport mechanism. Absorption is dose-dependent and saturable at high doses.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive compounds, mainly oxalic acid and ascorbate-2-sulfate, in the liver and other tissues.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation.
- Severe hyperoxaluria or a history of oxalate kidney stones (especially with high doses).
- Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (high doses).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
High doses of Vitamin C may decrease the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
Desferrioxamine
Concomitant use with high doses of Vitamin C may increase cardiac toxicity in iron overload.
Iron supplements
Vitamin C enhances the absorption of non-heme iron. While often beneficial for iron deficiency, it should be considered if iron levels are already high.
Aluminum-containing antacids
Vitamin C can increase the absorption of aluminum, especially in patients with kidney problems.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place (below 30°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to the water-soluble nature of vitamin C. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset (diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps). Management is symptomatic and supportive; reducing the dose or discontinuing the supplement usually resolves symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation at recommended dosages. Consult a doctor before taking doses significantly higher than the recommended daily allowance.

YesClinical Trials
As a widely recognized and established vitamin, extensive clinical trials for ascorbic acid's efficacy and safety are well-documented over decades. Specific trials for the C-Rich brand would typically focus on bioavailability, palatability, or specific formulation characteristics rather than primary efficacy.
Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring required for typical supplementation doses.
- Occasionally, serum vitamin C levels may be measured in suspected deficiency states.
- Monitor urine for oxalate levels in patients prone to kidney stones taking high doses.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on the importance of a balanced diet and that supplements are not a substitute.
- Advise caution in patients with a history of kidney stones, severe renal impairment, or G6PD deficiency before recommending high doses of Vitamin C.
- Highlight Vitamin C's role as an antioxidant and for immune support.
Patient Guidelines
- Take as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Chew the tablet completely before swallowing.
- Store in a cool, dry place.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
C-Rich 250 mg Chewable Tablet is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, as supplements should not replace a healthy diet.
- Stay hydrated to help prevent potential kidney stone formation, especially with higher doses.
