Description
Overview of the medicine
Cal-D-Zen 500 mg Tablet is a combination of Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3 used for the prevention and treatment of calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, and to support bone health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and dose adjustment may be necessary based on serum calcium levels; contraindicated in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Tablets can be taken with or without food, preferably with meals to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is essential for bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve function. Vitamin D3 helps in the absorption of calcium from the gut and its deposition into bones.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, effects on bone density are observed over weeks to months.
Excretion
Calcium is excreted primarily via feces and urine. Vitamin D3 metabolites are excreted mainly in bile and feces, with some renal excretion.
Half life
Elemental Calcium has no specific half-life; Vitamin D3's active metabolite (calcitriol) has a half-life of 3-6 hours.
Absorption
Calcium absorption varies (20-40%) and is enhanced by Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is well-absorbed from the gut.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized; Vitamin D3 is metabolized in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol).
