Description
Overview of the medicine
Cantina-1-cream is an antifungal medication containing Clotrimazole 1%. It is used to treat a variety of fungal skin infections, including athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes and yeasts.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area and surrounding skin, gently rubbing it in, 2 to 3 times daily. Continue treatment for 2-4 weeks, even if symptoms improve.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash the affected area and dry thoroughly before applying the cream. Wash hands before and after applying the cream to prevent spreading the infection.
Mechanism of Action
Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. This disruption leads to increased permeability of the fungal cell membrane, resulting in leakage of cellular contents and ultimately cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief typically begins within a few days of starting treatment, with full resolution taking 2-4 weeks.
Excretion
Metabolites are excreted in urine and feces.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption; estimated to be short if any systemic absorption occurs.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after topical application of clotrimazole cream. Less than 0.5% of the applied dose is absorbed, leading to very low plasma concentrations.
Metabolism
Absorbed clotrimazole is rapidly metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any other components of the cream.
Drug Interactions
Tacrolimus (systemic)
Although systemic absorption is minimal, theoretically, high dose topical clotrimazole might affect the metabolism of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, like systemic tacrolimus, but clinical significance is generally negligible for topical use.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to minimal absorption. If excessive amounts are applied, wipe off the excess and wash the area. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Clotrimazole is generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation. However, consult your doctor before use.
