Uses & Indications

How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. It can be taken with food to reduce stomach upset.
Mechanism of Action
Carisoprodol works by blocking interneuronal activity in the descending reticular formation and spinal cord, resulting in skeletal muscle relaxation. Its mechanism is not fully understood but involves general central nervous system depression.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys (urine) as meprobamate and other metabolites.
Half life
Carisoprodol: approximately 8 hours; Meprobamate (active metabolite): approximately 2-3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP2C19 to form meprobamate, an active metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to carisoprodol, meprobamate, or any component of the formulation.
- Acute intermittent porphyria.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Increased central nervous system (CNS) depressant effects.
CYP2C19 inhibitors/inducers
May alter carisoprodol metabolism and plasma concentrations.
CNS Depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids, sedatives, hypnotics)
Additive CNS depressant effects, increasing the risk of sedation, respiratory depression, and hypotension.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include CNS depression (e.g., stupor, coma, shock), respiratory depression, seizures, and hypotension. Management is primarily supportive, including gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and symptomatic treatment.
