Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprofloxacin 0.3% Eye Ointment is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For bacterial conjunctivitis: Apply a small amount (about 1/2 inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) three times daily for 7-14 days. For corneal ulcers: Apply a 1/2 inch ribbon into the conjunctival sac every 1-2 hours for the first 2 days, then every 4 hours for the next 5 days, and then 3 times a day for 7-14 days.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. No specific dosage adjustment is necessary.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for ophthalmic use as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch. Squeeze a small amount (about 1/2 inch) of ointment into the pouch. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, within hours of initial application.
Excretion
Primarily via urine if systemically absorbed; local excretion not significant.
Half life
Not clinically relevant for local ophthalmic use; systemic half-life is 3-5 hours if absorbed.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration; peak concentrations are achieved rapidly in ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the eye. If systemically absorbed, it is partially metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the ointment
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
Systemic drug interactions are unlikely due to minimal absorption. If using other ophthalmic medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent washout.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. If accidentally swallowed, supportive measures may be considered, but severe toxicity is rare.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation is generally considered safe due to minimal systemic absorption; however, consult a doctor before use. Limited human data suggest no increased risk of major birth defects.
