Description
Overview of the medicine
Decabutamol syrup is a bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other reversible obstructive airway diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2-4 mg (5-10 ml) three to four times daily. Maximum daily dose should not exceed 32 mg.
Elderly
Start with a lower dose, e.g., 2 mg (5 ml) three times daily, and adjust according to response and tolerability.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is usually required, but monitor for adverse effects, especially with high doses.
How to Take
Decabutamol syrup is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing. Shake the bottle well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Decabutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the muscle and subsequent bronchodilation. This helps to open the airways and improve breathing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bronchodilatory effect typically begins within 5-15 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via urine as metabolites and unchanged drug, with a small portion excreted in feces.
Half life
Plasma half-life ranges from 3 to 6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by conjugation to inactive sulfate metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to decabutamol, other sympathomimetics, or any excipients of the syrup.
- Patients with pre-existing severe cardiac arrhythmias, uncontrolled hypertension, or ischemic heart disease.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
Concomitant use with potassium-depleting diuretics (e.g., loop or thiazide diuretics) may increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Beta-blockers
Non-selective beta-blockers may antagonize the bronchodilatory effect of decabutamol and should generally be avoided. Cardioselective beta-blockers should be used with caution.
Other sympathomimetics
Concomitant use may lead to additive cardiovascular effects.
Tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of decabutamol, increasing the risk of arrhythmias and hypertension.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tachycardia, tremor, headache, palpitations, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia. In severe cases, cardiac arrest and death may occur. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including discontinuing the drug, monitoring vital signs, and correcting electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Decabutamol should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if decabutamol is excreted in human milk. Exercise caution when administered to a nursing mother. Always consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or lactation.
