Description
Overview of the medicine
Dexon-G Eye Drop is a combination medication containing Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, and Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is used to treat inflammatory eye conditions where there is a risk of bacterial infection or where a bacterial infection is already present.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 to 2 drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 3 to 4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. In severe cases, dosage may be increased to 2 drops every hour until improvement, then tapered.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients; use with caution.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment for topical ophthalmic use, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands thoroughly before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, instill the prescribed number of drops into the conjunctival sac, and gently close the eye. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Dexamethasone acts as a potent anti-inflammatory corticosteroid by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory effects can be observed within minutes to hours; antibacterial effects develop as therapeutic concentrations are reached.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed Dexamethasone is excreted renally; Gentamicin is excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Systemic half-life not clinically relevant for topical ophthalmic use.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. Primarily exerts local effects.
Metabolism
Topically applied Dexamethasone is metabolized in the liver; Gentamicin is not significantly metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Dexamethasone, Gentamicin, or any component of the formulation.
- Acute untreated purulent bacterial infections of the eye.
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures.
- Vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, especially herpes simplex keratitis.
- Mycobacterial infections of the eye.
Drug Interactions
Systemic Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use of systemic aminoglycosides may increase the risk of ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity, although systemic absorption from ophthalmic drops is usually minimal.
Other Ophthalmic Preparations
If using other ophthalmic medications, allow at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent washout.
Storage
Store at room temperature, below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from topical ocular administration is unlikely. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice immediately. Symptoms of systemic corticosteroid or aminoglycoside overdose are rare with ophthalmic preparations.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
