Description
Overview of the medicine
Esoz MUPS 20 mg tablet contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, used to reduce stomach acid production. It is formulated as MUPS for improved absorption.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
GERD: 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. Erosive Esophagitis: 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. Zollinger-Ellison: Initial 40 mg twice daily, adjust as needed.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment generally required, but caution in severe hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably at least one hour before a meal. Swallow whole, do not crush or chew. May be dispersed in water for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole irreversibly binds to the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells, inhibiting the final step of acid secretion.

Mainly excreted in urine (80%) and feces (20%) as metabolites.

Approximately 1-1.5 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, bioavailability is approximately 64% with a single 20 mg dose, increasing to 89% with repeated once-daily administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 system, primarily CYP2C19 and CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or any proton pump inhibitor.
- Concomitant use with nelfinavir.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased INR and prothrombin time.
Clopidogrel
Reduced antiplatelet effect.
Nelfinavir, Atazanavir
Reduced plasma levels of antiretrovirals.
Diazepam, Citalopram, Phenytoin
Increased plasma levels of these drugs.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, nausea, abdominal pain. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Esomeprazole is excreted in human breast milk; caution advised.
