Description
Overview of the medicine
Eyedew Eye Drop is a combination medication used to relieve redness, itching, burning, irritation, and discomfort due to minor eye irritations, colds, allergies, or exposure to wind and sun. It contains a decongestant (Naphazoline), an antihistamine (Chlorpheniramine), an antiseptic (Boric Acid), and an astringent (Zinc Sulfate) to provide comprehensive relief.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Naphazoline acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist, causing vasoconstriction of conjunctival blood vessels to reduce redness. Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an H1-receptor antagonist that blocks histamine action, reducing itching and allergic symptoms. Boric Acid has mild antiseptic and buffering properties. Zinc Sulfate acts as an astringent, helping to clear mucus from the outer surface of the eye.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, typically within minutes for redness relief.
Excretion
Minimal systemic excretion. Local effects dissipate over time.
Half life
Systemic half-life not well-characterized due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ocular administration. Primarily exerts local effects.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism. Components primarily act locally.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Potential for hypertensive crisis if systemic absorption occurs, though unlikely with topical ophthalmic use.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion or excessive topical use may lead to systemic effects of naphazoline such as drowsiness, sweating, slow heartbeat, or coma in severe cases. Local overdose may cause increased irritation. Seek medical attention if overdose is suspected.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or lactation. While systemic absorption is minimal, caution is advised.
