Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexonor 180 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It helps reduce sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, and itchy skin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: 180 mg once daily. Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but monitoring of renal function is advisable.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function, the recommended starting dose is 60 mg once daily. Consult a doctor for specific dosage.
How to Take
Take orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively binds to H1 receptors, blocking the action of histamine, which is responsible for allergic symptoms. Unlike older antihistamines, it does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, resulting in minimal to no sedation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (11%) via biliary and renal routes.
Half life
Approximately 11 to 15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in approximately 1 to 3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; about 5% is metabolized by the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
- Children under 6 years of age for the 180 mg strength.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
Can increase plasma levels of fexofenadine. Monitor for increased side effects.
Antacids containing Aluminum or Magnesium
Reduce fexofenadine absorption. Take fexofenadine at least 2 hours before or after these antacids.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea. In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis is not effective in removing fexofenadine from blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during lactation as fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk.
