Description
Overview of the medicine
Finix 10 mg capsule contains Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and other acid-related disorders.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For symptomatic GERD (non-erosive): 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks. For healing of erosive esophagitis: 20 mg or 40 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. For Finix 10 mg capsule, typically used for maintenance or mild symptoms, or for children based on specific guidelines.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients, but caution is advised due to potential for reduced hepatic/renal function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with impaired renal function.
How to Take
Take Finix 10 mg capsule orally, usually once daily, at least one hour before a meal. Swallow the capsule whole; do not chew or crush. For patients who have difficulty swallowing, the capsule can be opened and the contents mixed with half a glass of non-carbonated water, stirred, and drunk immediately. Do not chew or crush the pellets.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole selectively inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) located on the secretory surface of the parietal cells in the stomach. This irreversible blockade of the final step of acid production leads to a sustained reduction in gastric acid secretion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Acid inhibitory effect typically occurs within 1 hour after oral administration.
Excretion
Approximately 80% of the dose is excreted as metabolites in the urine, and the remaining 18% in the feces.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life is approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations occur within 1-2 hours. Bioavailability is approximately 64% after a single 40 mg dose and increases to 89% after repeated once-daily administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme system, mainly by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles, or any component of the formulation.
- Concomitant use with nelfinavir.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased digoxin plasma levels, requiring monitoring.
Warfarin
Increased INR and prothrombin time, potentially leading to abnormal bleeding.
Clopidogrel
May reduce the antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel by inhibiting its conversion to active metabolite.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate plasma levels, potentially leading to toxicity.
Atazanavir/Nelfinavir
Reduced plasma levels of these antiretrovirals, potentially leading to loss of therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and include gastrointestinal disturbances and fatigue. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
