Description
Overview of the medicine
Fixal 60 mg Tablet is used to manage neuropathic pain, a type of chronic pain caused by nerve damage. It helps in reducing the burning, shooting, and stabbing pain and also improves sleep quality.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 60 mg once daily, adjusted based on response up to 180 mg/day in divided doses.
Elderly
Start with a lower dose (e.g., 30 mg) and titrate carefully due to potential reduced renal clearance.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required. For creatinine clearance <60 mL/min, reduce dose and/or frequency.
How to Take
Take Fixal 60 mg Tablet orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Fexalgin Hydrobromide is an alpha-2-delta ligand that binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. This binding modulates the release of several excitatory neurotransmitters, thereby reducing neuronal hyperexcitability and pain signaling.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief typically begins within 1-2 weeks of consistent use.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fexalgin or any component of the formulation.
- Acute severe respiratory depression.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Increases risk of sedation and dizziness. Avoid concomitant use.
Antacids
May decrease the absorption of Fexalgin. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
CNS Depressants (e.g., Opioids, Benzodiazepines)
May enhance CNS depressant effects, including respiratory depression and sedation. Use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, dizziness, ataxia, and lethargy. Treatment is primarily supportive. Hemodialysis can remove Fexalgin from the systemic circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly necessary, as animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity. Excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution is advised during breastfeeding or consider discontinuing the drug.
