Description
Overview of the medicine
Flomox-05 Eye Drop contains Moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible organisms. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication and repair.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment necessary.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, instill the drop, and close the eye gently. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within hours for symptom relief.
Excretion
Mainly renal and fecal excretion for systemically absorbed drug; minimal for topical ocular application.
Half life
Not precisely defined for topical ocular use due to minimal systemic absorption; systemic half-life is approximately 12 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ocular administration. Local absorption into ocular tissues is good.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism after topical ocular administration; primarily hepatic for systemically absorbed drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Systemic corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendon rupture with systemic fluoroquinolones, but unlikely with topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Other topical eye medications
If using other ophthalmic drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15°C-30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
Overdose
Due to minimal systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration, an overdose is unlikely. If excessive drops are applied, flush the eye with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Exercise caution when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a physician.
